Dunkin Donuts
Yes you read that right. I learned a lot in my time in Iceland, and one thing that I hadn't thought would stick out in my memory was the popularity of this American chain. Dunkin Donuts is to Iceland what Starbucks is to the United States. Since bakeries are all the rage in Iceland, I always had my eye out for our next great find. That and I thoroughly enjoy donuts. Just as Brauð & Co. had their storefront stocked full of delicious bakeries, there was another that captivated my fondness for pastries.
As we were walking through the cozy streets of Reykjavik I found my nose pressed to the glass of what looked like a sweet-tooth's dream. Stemming the entire length of the store were perfectly crafted donuts of all shapes, sizes, and varieties. Without even looking to see what heaven-on-earth bakery this was I bolted inside. By the time I got to the front, I noticed a very familiar logo. This was a Dunkin Donuts!
By the time the person behind the counter greeted me I will admit I felt a little embarrassed having charged in all excited thinking I had found a new, original Icelandic bakery. Needless to say, the donuts looked way too good and I was far to hungry to leave empty handed, so I ordered. My first ever Dunkin Donuts experience consisted of caramel filled donuts, one with the Icelandic flag on it (fittingly), and of all places not in America.
My advice: a little piece of home is always nice, even with a foreign spin on it.
Just wing it.
